Painting is an act of faith, not only in the medium chosen and the subject depicted but in the collective audience as well. Artists must believe in their work, for any doubt begins to show through misplaced strokes, irregular color, and cloudy themes. Contemporary production must look beyond the mere canvas and look towards influences past, present, and future all melding to create a sum greater than the whole. While the burden of creation may lie on the artist, the viewer brings their life to the painting; interpretation, reflection, opinion all varying per person. These works were created for a myriad of reasons each as important and relative as the next, but none as important as whatever reaction is drawn from those who look at the piece.
